What can I say. Clooney is no fool. Lake Como is just as amazing and beautiful as everyone has said. We took the back roads between the mountains we were staying at and lake como and had an amazing time seeing much of the Italian alps skiing community. We finally made it to our adorable hotel, a 5 min walk from downtown Bellagio, and headed in to town for a refreshment. Lo and behold we found an open air market where the local micro brewery from como was pouring their beer out of one of the most beautiful portable tap systems I have ever seen. Complete with a tiny little copper kettle on the top of the taps. The brewmaster was there pouring his beer with his girlfriend who also makes specialty tea. We chatted with them about local beer and tasted their 3 different beers on tap. The wheat was my favorite and Greg drank up plenty of their dark ale. We tooled round for the rest of the day and then had fabulous dinner up a tiny little street in the idyllic streets of Como.
Morning had us up early as we quickly realized that we were farther away from Verona than we realized and we didn't want to pay extra for our adorable smart car. Greg navigated us back through the autostradt perfectly and we made it back to the rental company only 1 minute late. After saying goodbye to our little "Torante" we jumped on the next train to Venice, and headed to the city of romance and Indiana Jones.
I have heard stories of Venice and seen many a movie based in this beautiful city but there was nothing that could accurately prepare me for the visual experience that is Venice. The boats, the canals, the smell of the canals, the sinking buildings, the carless tiny streets that wind their way around these tiny little islands. I was in heaven. Since this was the last new city we would be in before we headed back to the states we decided that we would just relax, walk around, drink our new favorite aperol spritzers and just get lost in Venice. We of course went and checked out San Marco, the Jewish Ghetto, and took a little self guided tour on the amazingly well run Vapporetto bus boats but generally we just hung out, relaxed and tried to wrap our minds around the past 6weeks and the upcoming 2 week road trip that we had ahead of us.
Overall Venice was pretty low key for us. We had some amazing food and just got lost in the back streets. We took a very nice boat ride to the airport on Tuesday and had an eventless flight to Amsterdam on Tuesday afternoon. We ended staying one more night in the hotel from our first time we were in amsterdam, back in september, and of course made a quick trip back to our favorite little brewpub around the corner.
Wednesday brought our flight back to NYC and our reunion with Lola who was happy, but quite stunned to see us again. We have a very very busy day and a half clearing out our storage unit and trying to get it all into dad's truck
We are now currently cruzin down I-40 in the back of the chevy silverado, loaded up with stuff and pulling a 26foot rv trailer. Next up: Nashville to see the sites and hopefully scalp some tickets to the grand ole Opry for mom, plus try to find ourselves some yazoo brewing company beer.
We currently have about 2500 miles to go...
Onward and westward,
Missy and Greg
